Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan

Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan (lit. Zaido: Space Sheriffs) is a fantasy Philippine drama by GMA Network. This is a spin-off of the Japanese Metal Heroes series Uchuu Keiji Shaider and is somewhat a revival of the Metal Hero genre.

The production for the series began last October 2006. Originally conceived to be a Filipino remake of the original Shaider (with Marky Cielo in the lead role), it became a spin-off series which stars Dennis Trillo. Toei rejected the original script but gave its blessing to a spin-off series set twenty years after the original series.

The series premiered on September 24, 2007, replacing Impostora. A series primer was aired on September 22, 2007, called Zaido: Ang Bagong Alamat - The Making of Zaido, and featured members of the main cast and crew.

A connection to the original series is made through the display of various clips from Uchuu Keiji Shaider during the Galactic Force Space City sequences, the "special video game" Alexis inherits from his mother and beginning in Episode 4, it is revealed that the original Alexis del Mundo lives on as a hologram. The three Zaidos are also meant to be a homage to the original Space Sheriffs: Shaider, Gavan, and Sharivan.

Other names and terminology in the series are also intended as a homage to the original series, and there are also references to other shows and cultural conventions. Kuuma Le-ar also has a transvestite grandson named Ida (a role that a famous Filipino gay comedian wanted to play) who is rejuvenated by drinking a concoction made from the blood of young women. Paolo Ballesteros was chosen to portray Ida. The character Amy is a homage to Shaider's partner Annie, and it is revealed in the series that Avilo (a spacecraft/robot) and the Zaido Falcons (combat motorcycles for the Red, Blue and Green Zaido) are updated versions of Shaider's Vavilos (Babilos in the Philippine dub) and Blue Hawk, respectively.

[ Plot ]

Twenty years have passed since Alexis Del Mundo, also known as the second Shaider, destroyed the clan of the Fuuma Le-ar. The descendants of the clan, now known as the Kuuma, have emerged to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting universe. Gallian, a descendant of Del Mundo, has a mission and form an elite group of space sheriffs known as the Zaido.

[ The Zaido ]

Zaido armor is manufactured from the strongest and lightest material known. The suits are designed to boost the wearer's strength and reflexes 100%. Additionally, a Zaido is armed with the Zaido Blaster, a beam pistol, Zaido Blade, a laser sword, and Zaido Bow, a bow and arrow that pierces everything it hits.

Gallian Magdalion/Zaido Blue
Age: 26

Gallian was the Crown Prince of the Planet Nalax, prior to the Kuuma-supported coup by his uncle Izcaruz which resulted in the death of his father and the loss of her mother, Armida. His training for the Kingship of Nalax, coupled with his heritage, makes him a talented and dedicated leader. As the Blue Zaido and head of the Zaido, he was tasked to look for other Zaido all over the world to help him fight for the safety of the universe. During his first stay in Earth he met Carmela, who he then believed was his fiancé Princess Aryana. Based on his rank, his name, having the commander's daughter as his love, and his alien origins, he represents Uchuu Keiji Gavan. He also wields the power of telekinesis. When he transforms, he says the words: Codename: Zaido Blue:

Alagad ng Kapayapaan
Alexis Lorenzo/Zaido Green
Age: 18

Alexis comes from a poor family. After watching his father die from a sniper's bullet, he has since vowed to help destroy evil. He became a policeman, and tried to live up to the principles of righteousness, even when his colleagues were being co-opted by criminal elements. When Gallian finds him, Alexis joins the Galactic Force and eventually becomes the Green Zaido. He has feelings for Amy but has not yet realized this. His name, Alexis, is the same as the main character in the Philippine dubbed version of Shaider. When he transforms, he is uttering the words: Codename: Zaido Green: Sugo ng Kabutihan

Cervano Torres/Zaido Red
Age: 17

Like Alexis, Cervano also comes from Earth -- but while his cousin led a harsh life, Cervano's was raised in relative comfort and security. He leaves his home when he finds out he was just adopted into the Torres family. Due to this he is kidnapped by the Kuuma but is saved by Gallian and Alexis. But even with his less than pleasing personality, he manages to attract the girls. He tries to use this with Amy but it does not please her. He has a robot which was made to serve him called Robix (a customized Robosapien that transforms from a Rubik's Cube). He's also a biological son of Sharina, one of Shaider's children (her name after Sharivan, a space sheriff). Despite his fact, Cervano turns out to be Drigo's son and points out to be half-human, half-Kuuma. When he transforms, he says: Codename: Zaido Red: Bantay ng Kalayaan

[ Humans]

Helen Lorenzo/Shanara

Helen is a loving mother to Alexis, Alvaro, and Oggy. She protects a dark secret involving one of her sons that will change the destiny of the Zaido. Unknown to many, her original name which was according to Commander Zion is Shanara who is also one of Shaider's children.

Alvaro Lorenzo/Azur/Gamma

Alvaro was Alexis' older brother who was led to live as an outlaw upon their father's death so he could provide for the family. Later he is mysteriously kidnapped by a group of unidentified men. They turn out to be fellow members of Ramiro's crime syndicate, who gun him down on Ramiro's orders after he had found out the truth about his father's death. Alvaro is actually still alive, and is recovered by Gallian, although now an amnesiac. He gains powers with Gallian's intervention and is given the code name Azur.[5] Along with his newfound powers is a restoration of his memory and his eventual reunification with his family. When he saw Carmela (Aryana clone) falls in love with Gallian, he gets angry to them and later becomes Gamma who is sent by Kuuma Le-ar to beat the Zaido (especially his own brother who is also a Zaido). It was revealed that Ida is responsible for reviving Alvaro and using him to become Gamma before Gallian found him on Earth. Gamma was defeated by Zaido Blue for the first time despite his gamma ray attacks. Alvaro helps Amasonang Lila (Debbie) to kill Ramiro but instead, he gets betrayed when she defends her father from his fight in which Alvaro remembered Ramiro killed him and they fly off to Kuuma Empire. His new target is Zaido Green who is his own brother. It turns out that he didn't want to kill Alexis and gets brainwashed revealing his "Gamma" alias to his brother. It is unknown that Alvaro will become an ally to Galactic Force (even Zaido) and turn on Kuuma.

Ramiro

Ramiro is a colleague and good friend of Alberto Lorenzo, Alexis' father and an outstanding policeman. Unknown to Lorenzo family however, is that Ramiro is also the head of a criminal syndicate composed of corrupt police officers and other lawless elements. He ordered Alberto's death and also of his son Alvaro when the latter discovered what had happened to his father. He has also recently ordered the execution of Mona, as the young reporter is coming dangerously close to exposing him and his gang. But he does not carry this out as the case of Alvaro is "solved" when he frames one of his men as the supposed murderer of Alvaro. The Kuumas want to know Ramiro if they have to locate and retrieve Le-ar's body on Earth and he replies that Helen (Shanara) knows the location of the body. He has a condition that he would give the information about Le-ar's body in exchange for his daughter. Ramiro eventually affiliates the Kuuma forces after his relationship with Helen has broken.

Carmela Langit/Princess Aryana

She is known as Princess Aryana of Avea who has a destiny to marry of Prince Gallian of Nalax. She is lost during the Kuuma-supported coup of the planet, and her ship crashed into the Earth. She has found alive by Mona and her grandmother but she lost her memory. She was named as Carmela Langit. Carmela falls in love with Alvaro Lorenzo. She once again meets Gallian when he crashed to Earth after fighting the Kuuma and is inexplicably attracted to him. Reluctant at first, Carmela helps Gallian locate the other Zaido. She is now busy with her sister looking for leads as to the fate of her missing boyfriend. Carmela also found out that her memories are still intact even though other humans got their memories erased after witnessing the Zaido and Kuuma fight on earth. This made Gallian conclude that she's really Princess Aryana. Carmela (or Aryana) can fight against evil guys (like Kuuma and Amasonas) and sometimes team up with Amy in battle. She later joins in the Galactic Force after she was saved by Zaido Blue from Kuuma. When Gallian flies home to his planet, he attacks Kuumas including Izcaruz and saves his mother (Armida) and a true Aryana. Gallian finds out that Carmela is a clone of Aryana and later she meets the real Avea princess. This concludes that the real Aryana made the clone of her image.

Mona Langit

Mona is Carmela's adopted sister and was studying journalism in the city at the start of the series. When the Kuuma invade Alexis' hometown and the Lorenzos are forced to move to the city, they end up living in the same neighborhood. Mona harbors a secret crush on Alexis, and is distressed at his sudden "assignment". She is now investigating the disappearance of her sister's boyfriend, Alvaro. In episode 11, Mona cosplayed as Annie from Shaider.

Thor Mentor

Thor is Alexis' cousin and colleague in the police force who has done nothing but make his life miserable. He will pursue Mona when Alexis disappears. Thor's full name is a pun for "tormentor".

Oggy Lorenzo/Zaido Kid Green

Oggy is the youngest of three sons of Helen. He joins Zaido Kids as Zaido Kid Green (mini Alexis).

Gelo Torres/Zaido Kid Red

Gelo is Cervano's brother who is also adopted. He joins Zaido Kids as Zaido Kid Red (mini Cervano).

Doctor Eng

Dr. Eng is a inventor who always believes in aliens (like Kuuma) from outerspace. Dr. Eng is a homage to Shaider's Dr. Ang, the Filipino dub version of

Kojiro Aoyama.

Toby Mendoza/Zaido Gold/Shadow

Toby Mendoza is Cervano's fan in college who was being bullied by Cervano's friends (who became traitors to Cervano). In order for Toby to live, he needed B- (B negative) blood, which Cervano hastily donated since he also had B- blood. After his recovery, he became best friends with Cervano. Seeing Cervano being beaten up by his former peers, he saves him with the help of his newly acquired powers which came from Cervano's blood. He styles himself "Zaido Gold" and fashions a costume out of painted motocross riding gear and similar paraphernalia. He has participated in several battles with (and in some case, in place of) the Zaido and asked Cervano if he could be part of the team. When he was refused, we see him next as Shadow, a Zaido-like enemy and fights against the Zaido. Disappeared after he was defeated by the Zaido Squad.

[ Galactic Force ]

Commander Zion

Commander Zion is the head of Galactic Force like his predecessor, Commander Qom. He trains Gallian, Alexis and Cervano to form Zaido Squad. As their commander, Zion also becomes a surrogate father for the three Zaidos. Luna, Zion's wife who was in his hallucinations, is actually still alive and she guards the tomb of Kuuma Le-Ar's body which was buried on Earth as an order by Zion himself. He replaces Armida, Gallian's mother, as a leader of the Galactic Force.

Lyka

Lyka is Commander Zion's daughter who teaches in the Galactic Force Academy. She also serves as an assistant to Gallian, with whom she shares a forbidden relationship. Lyka is now presumed or believed deceased, her ship having crashed into an asteroid. Lyka is a homage to Mimi of original Space Sheriff series.

Lyvia

Lyka's sister and Commander Zion's daughter. She has now taken over flight instructor duties from her sister in the Galactic Force. She is bitter towards her father and Gallian, as she holds them responsible for the death of her sister Lyka. Later, she becomes a traitor and joins Kuuma. However, she saves her father from Kuuma and changes her heart to forgive her father.

Amy Mantyra

From the planet Zendar, Amy is a Galactic Force Academy student whose affection will be fought over by Alexis and Cervano. She also aspires to be a Zaido, but Galactic Force rules indicate that no women can become a Space Sheriff much to her chagrin. After masquerading as Odillion Lasseter, a dog person from another planet, Amy passes the Galactic Force examinations, only to be exposed by Lyvia at the graduation ceremonies. Frustrated by her situation, she escapes Galactic Force HQ and heads to Earth, where she is taken in as a boarder by Doctor Eng. In Episode 27, after assisting the Zaido against their first battle with the Amasonas, she is made a full member of the Galactic Force.

Ulla

Ulla is an alien rooster, who invents gadgets, weapons and machines for Zaido and the Galactic Force. Ulla is a homage to Kitz from Shaider.

Aqualia/Zaido Kid Blue

Aqualia is the young kid from the Galactic Force who inspires Gallian. He forms a group called Zaido Kids, a mini version of Zaido Squad, and the group leader is Aqualia himself as Zaido Kid Blue and the members are Oggy (Zaido Kid Green), Gelo (Zaido Kid Red), Vea (Zaido Kid Pink, mini Carmela) and Avi (Zaido Kid Yellow, mini Amy).

Ave and Vea

The twins sisters from Avea, Carmela's home planet. They're saved by Carmela and Aqualia from the Kuuma attacks. Later, they join the Zaido Kids as Zaido Kid Yellow and Pink (mini versions of Amy and Carmela).

[ Kuuma Empire ]

The Kuuma are the descendants of the clan of Fuuma Le-ar. They follow a strategy in making a planet part of the Kuuma empire: they kidnap the children of a planet to alert the adults, they then negotiate with the planets leaders. If they surrender, the planet will become a part of the Kuuma empire. If not the planet is destroyed, the planet Earth is the only planet not under control the Kuuma or destroyed. They have the Time Space Warp (Strange Dimension) a realm with temperatures reaching up to 6000 degrees Celsius. It magnifies the power of their soldiers and monsters. Like the original Fuuma grunts called Miraclers, Kuuma grunts are also spies and have the ability to disguise as humans.

Kuuma Le-ar

The evil leader of the Kuuma Empire bent on annihilating all beings in the galaxy. Le-ar is a giant head with a third eye on his forehead and permanently situated on the center Kuuma Palace wall. He "bears" the Kuuma monsters by spewing out a cocoon from its mouth. He seeks to retrieve his body which was found on Earth before Zaido Squad does.

Ida II

Ida is the grandson and adviser of Le-ar. He is also the high priest of the Kuuma and is hailed as one of the most beautiful beings in the universe. Like his ancestor God Officer Poe (or Babaylan Ida in the Philippine dubbed version), Ida maintains his flawless, androgynous appearance by imbibing a concoction made from the blood of 13 young women. Ida is known for his trademark phrase "Time Space Warp, ngayon din!" (roughly translates to "Strange Dimension, now!").

Drigo II

As Le-ar's field commander, Drigo leads the Kuuma in their campaign against Earth. Unlike his predecessor Hessler (Drigo I), he is rather incompetent and is often the subject of derogatory comments. In flashbacks, he revealed that he had a relationship with Sharina, Cervano's real mother but unbeknownst to him and to Captain Zion, it was actually Shanara (Helen) who was impregnated by Drigo when she pretended to be her twin sister to break up with him. Drigo turns out to be Cervano's father and points out that his son is half-human, half-Kuuma. Despite being a Kuuma, he occasionally helps Cervano in different battles.

Ida Dida

Ida Dida is the mini version of Ida who Le-ar gave birth during Ida's birthday. Even if Ida speaks, she repeats what he says.

Fasullo/Inday

Fasullo is a Kuuma intelligence agent sent by Drigo to guard the Zaidos (especially Cervano). He disguises as Inday, an English-speaking maid working for Cervano's Family. When Fasullo first appeared and talked to Drigo, he had a male voice. This is to point out that all Kuumas are male (except for Ida Dida), and they had to "recruit" female human beings just so they can form a group of Amasonas (so that they get to have real female members).

Gayke

Gayke is a Kuuma grunt who is usually sent by Ida to aid in their missions (as opposed to Fasullo with Drigo). He disguises as a female human being, but retains the mannerisms of a Kuuma soldier. He sometimes accompanies Ida when they go to Earth for a mission. Gayke wanted to keep his "female human" form but he was hesitant because of Ida. Ida agreed to let Gayke keep his girly form so that he can watch over the kids of Tala and help any Kuuma monster in carrying out the mission.

[ Amasonas ]

The Amasonas (literally Amazons) are a revival of the Girl's Army in the original Shaider series. The term was used to describe the Girl's Army in the Philippine dubbed version of Shaider. Unlike the original kunoichi who were unidentified, The new Amasonas are identified by color and are in reality, human beings taken from Planet Earth. All the amasonas have had a bad history with the men in their lives. During that time, the Kuuma Empire was also in dire need of reinforcements, as a lot of Drigo's men were killed in the battle with the three Zaido. Ida took advantage of this point when the girls were filled with hatred, sorrow and confusion, and brought them and other girls who were also troubled in a "seminar" for women called KUMA or KUmakalinga sa mga Magdalenang Api (lit: Those who care for oppressed women). The five were chosen because according to Ida, they had the most hatred inside of them, plus he didn't want the looks of all the other girls. Ida hypnotized and brought the five girls to the Kuuma headquarters where they were turned into amasonas. The colors of their respective Amasona outfits are the same as the colors of the dress/clothes they were wearing during their transformation. Their powers are using gold magic dust to put victims into sleep. Later, they have remembered their loved ones and their lives and have to betray the Kuuma. However, Ida orders the Kuumas to reprogram the Amasonas to make them stronger than before.

Amasonang Lila/Debbie

The fastest of the Amasonas, Amasonang Lila's (Purple Amazon) expertise lies on the use of her personal weapon: the kali. She is Ramiro's daughter, and a colleague of Mona's at the newspaper. Debbie has recently discovered that it was her father who ordered the execution of Alvaro, Alexis' older brother.

Amasonang Itim/Sonia Tamano

Amasonang Itim (Black Amazon) used to be a colleague of Carmela in a security agency. Seeing Gallian save her from a hostage-taker made her readily fall for him. However, after making advances on him, she was rejected by Gallian and was told off by Carmela. Adding the fact that she was cheated upon by her former boyfriend, she was pushed to the brink which made her join KUMA. Now, she is an expert in pistols and fights for the forces of Kuuma.

Amasonang Rosas/Marla

Amasonang Rosas (Pink Amazon) is a martial arts expert who used to be one of Doctor Eng's boarders. Before she became an Amasona, she was being harassed by her training officer at a fast food chain. When she rejected his advances, she was eliminated from the training and was replaced by another one who is more "qualified" when in reality she just refused to kiss the officer. Of all the Amasonas, she is the strongest. Her weapons are a pair of short, trident-like blades.

Amasonang Puti/Stacy

Amasonang Puti (White Amazon) was once a scorned girlfriend of Cervano before joining the Amasonas. From her group, she is cursed with a conscience, and must struggle every time if she will do good or evil. Her weapon is a spiked ball attached to a chain which she uses to hit her enemies and/or make them immobilized by bounding them with the chain.

Amasonang Kahel/Rhea

Another girlfriend of Cervano scorned, Amasonang Kahel (Orange Amazon) becomes more aggressive after she becomes part of the Kuuma Empire. With her expertise in guns and her sharp eye for shooting, she will prove to be a formidable enemy.

[ Kuuma Monsters ]

Nigi-nigi - First monster deployed by Kuuma. It can destroy enemies using laser beams from its eyes. It vaguely resembles the Predator from the film series, albeit this creature had a cluster of tentacles as hands. Eliminated by Zaido Blue in a Time Space Warp Battle.

Bawaw-aw - The monster's name is the Filipino onomatopoeia of a dog's bark.

Bawaw-aw can disguise as a Pomeranian named "Mighty" which can bite victims so they get infected with rabies and turn into animals. Wiped out by Zaido Red in a Time Space Warp battle.

Tinik-ik - The monster shaped like a Venus fly trap. Named after the Tagalog term for thorns, tinik. It can devour living things (even humans) to grow bigger and stronger and has a sweet scent so that the victims may attract and worship it. If this monster grows stronger, it turns the victims (including Amy) into plants. Dr. Eng named the plant as "Mimosa Negra" because of the dark color it has. Destroyed by Zaido Green in a Time Space Warp battle.

Siba-tiba - The huge, orange-skinned monster that his weapons are giant knife and giant fork which can turn any victims into food and also has the power to use odorous gas to put the victims into sleep. Named after the Tagalog terms for glutton, Siba, and for fat, tiba, which is also meaning of taba. He can disguise as a human like the other Kuumas and he is named as "Tabatino". He's also responsible for making and selling crispy chips to make the children (as victims) enlarge their stomach and excess the same gas.[8] There is another mini version of Siba-Tiba. Zaido Green slayed Siba-tiba by using Avilo Robot in Time Space Warp battle and it's mini version is also slayed by Zaido Kids.[14]
Bola-boba - This monster that his body is composed of other types of sports balls and other sports equipment and his head is a trophy. Named after Tagalog words for ball, bola, and for dumb, boba. He disguises as a coach named "Vola". The mini version of Bola-boba disguises as a human (Buboy) also and uses a mini ball as a spell to make the children playful endlessly. Bola-boba kidnaps the Starlight varsity players and turn them into Kuuma grunts so that he can make the losing athletes and audiences (as victims) into trophies by using a ball. The mini version of Bola-boba was defeated by Zaido Kids and the spell was removed. Killed by Zaido Blue in Time Space Warp battle.

Pasko-paksiw - This green-skinned monster (vaguely resembles The Grinch) who dresses up as Santa Claus and the mini version dresses up also as an elf.[16] Pasko-paksiw gives the children a Christmas sock and a pendant (as traps), which when the children sleep, the mysterious power of a pendant flows out, gets the children and put them inside the sock to turn them into Christmas balls. Terminated by Zaido Red in Time Space Warp battle.

Giga-wiga - Half-monster, half-machine deployed by Kuuma that his body armor is composed of game controller buttons and two monitors with two orbs on his shoulders and his head is topped with a monitor screen also. It has metal sharp claws as a weapon. Disguising as "Giggle", he hacks the virus into the computers (even video game gadgets) and making them into his video game so that he may use his powers to trap the players or clients (as victims) inside the video game and any victim (challenger) will challenge Giga-wiga. He creates the miniature version of his image to fight the Zaido Kids and later defeated by them. Zaido Blue dispatches Giga-wiga by using Avilo Robot in Time Space Warp battle.

Roko-Loko - A skull-faced monster who wields his electronic guitar as his weapon to hypnotize audience (victims) so that they would praise the Kuuma. He accompanies with Kuumas to disguise as humans including Roko-loko himself (Rock) to form his rock band.
